GUY LAFLEUR |
|
Right Wing Stanley Cups: 5 No. 10 was retired on February 16, 1985. |
Once his familiar No. 10 was raised to the Forum rafters on Feb. 16, 1985, Guy Lafleur took his rightful place among the greatest players to ever slip on a Canadiens jersey. The deafening chants of “Guy! Guy! Guy!”, were never louder than on that special night, as Lafleur brought Habs fans out of their seats one more time.
Without question, no other player on those brilliant Montreal teams of the 1970s personified the Canadiens’ dominance of that era more than Lafleur. His trademark rushes up the right wing, flowing hair, booming shot and knack for scoring the big goal, helped make “The Flower” a household name and the league’s brightest star of his time.
The Thurso, Quebec native put up six straight 50-plus goal seasons on his way to becoming the youngest player in NHL history to score 400 goals or amass 1,000 points. Widely regarded as one of the greatest right wingers in NHL history, he still holds many Canadiens’ team records, including most points (1,246) and assists (728) over his glorious 14-year Habs career.
Lafleur also never saw a NHL award he didn’t like. The six-time all star won three Art Ross Trophies as scoring champion, two Hart Trophies as league MVP and three Lester B. Pearson awards as league MVP voted on by his NHL peers. But like all Canadiens greats, Lafleur saved his best work for the playoffs.
The five-time Stanley Cup champion played an exceptionally huge role in Montreal’s string of four consecutive Cups from 1976 through 1979. Lafleur led all postseason scorers for three straight years, including 1977 when he earned the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. Lafleur was inducted to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1988.
