Downed in Denver
Montréal Canadiens 2, Colorado Avalanche 3

DENVER (AP) - T.J. Galiardi broke a second-period tie, Craig Anderson stopped 27 shots and the Colorado Avalanche won their sixth straight game, beating the Montreal Canadiens 3-2 on Sunday night.

Ryan Wilson and Kevin Porter also scored for the Avalanche, the highest-scoring team in the NHL.

Michael Cammalleri and Alexandre Picard scored for Montreal.

The Canadiens pulled goalie Carey Price for an extra skater with 1:08 left, but couldn't tie it.

Anderson was solid in net as he matched a career high with his sixth straight win. He helped the Avalanche kill a late penalty and earlier thwarted a scoring attempt from Andrei Kostitsyn, lunging out of the net and knocking the puck off Kostitsyn's stick.

Colorado also had to weather a long, lung-searing shift midway through the final period when it couldn't clear the puck out of the zone without it resulting in icing.

Colorado took a 3-2 lead late in the second period on a wrist shot from Galiardi, just back from a fractured right wrist after missing more than a month.

He shot the puck at Price, before crashing into the Montreal goalie, along with Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban and teammate Greg Mauldin. In the meantime, the puck trickled through Price's pads and into the net for Galiardi's second goal in as many games.

Canadiens - Avalanche highlights

The officials took a moment to review the goal, before declaring it good.

Earlier in the second period, Porter scored his seventh goal of the season on a backhanded shot that tied up Price. Picard also had a goal for Montreal in the period on a power play, knocking in a rebound over a sprawled-out Anderson.

The Canadiens didn't take long to capitalize on a high-sticking call on Philippe Dupuis in the opening period, scoring 10 seconds later when Cammalleri knocked in a shot past Anderson. Cammalleri has now scored in three of the last four contests.

The Avalanche tied the game with 5.5 seconds remaining in the first period when Wilson blasted in a shot from the blue line on a power play. Anderson was credited with his first assist of the season on Wilson's goal.

Paul Stastny returned to the lineup Sunday after missing a game with an upper back injury. He was injured in Chicago last Wednesday after awkwardly sliding into the boards following a hit.

Milan Hejduk and Cody McLeod missed the game against the Canadiens with groin injuries. Both are listed as day-to-day.

The injury-riddled Avalanche announced before the game that defenseman Kyle Quincey will need season-ending shoulder surgery. He has been sidelined since hurting the shoulder Dec. 11 at Washington.

Ryan O'Byrne was solid against his former team. He fell out of favor in Montreal earlier this season and was traded to the Avalanche, where he's been a mainstay on defense.

NOTES: This was the only meeting between the two teams in 2010-11. ... Montreal's Jacques Martin coached his 1,213th NHL game Sunday, tying him with Jacques Lemaire for eighth place. Scotty Bowman tops the list with 2,141. ... The Canadiens began a seven-game road swing, their longest stretch of the season. ... Avs F Ryan O'Reilly had two assists.
