PLAYERS AND ORGANIZATIONALEX KOVALEV – KOVY’S KIDS Alex Kovalev has talent, lots of it, and he also had a big heart. The Montreal Canadiens forward made a commitment to the community and the Canadiens Children’s Foundation by providing a private suite to allow sick and underprivileged children to attend Canadiens games and enjoy an unforgettable experience at the Bell Centre. His wife Eugenia regularly visits their guests in the suite, as does team mascot Youppi!. In 2006-07, over 300 kids accepted Kovalev’s invitation to come and cheer on the home team.
SAKU KOIVU – THE SAKU KOIVU FOUNDATION
The Saku Koivu Foundation was launched on November 13, 2002 with the objective of providing the greater Montreal area with a PET/CT scanner, a high-tech piece of equipment featuring Positron Emission Tomography technology.
The goal was achieved in 2005 after the Foundation raised the $2.5 million necessary to purchase the Montreal’s first PET/CT scanner, which has since been in use at the Montreal General Hospital. The highly sophisticated piece of equipment plays an important role in improving patient treatment and helped the McGill University Health Centre remain at the forefront as a leader in cancer treatment.
In March 2007, the Saku Koivu Foundation teamed up with the Montreal General Hospital Foundation to raise $750,000 for cancer treatment and trauma research at the Montreal General Hospital of the McGill University Health Centre.
