Jacques Plante

Jacques Plante spent the majority of the 1952-53 season with the AHL’s Buffalo Bisons, where he made a name for himself despite his team’s last-place finish. His play in the minors earned Plante a call-up to Montreal that spring to back-up Gerry McNeil in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. After dutifully watching from the sidelines for the first few games, Plante was called on to start Game 6 of the semifinals, earning a shutout in a 3-0 victory before posting another win a few days later to eliminate the Blackhawks in seven games. He and McNeil split time between the pipes in the Finals, leading the Canadiens to a 4-1 series win over the Bruins to capture the franchise’s seventh Stanley Cup.
