In the third annual Winter Classic, the NHL decided to pit bitter rivals against each other in historic Fenway Park. The Flyers made the trek to Boston for the tilt, looking to spoil the party in Boston in true “Broad Street Bullies” style. Just 12 minutes into the game, Shawn Thornton and Daniel Carcillo drop the gloves for the first official fight in Winter Classic history. The first goal of the game doesn’t come until the second period, with Philly forward Danny Syvret potting his first career NHL goal to open the scoring for the visitors. One period later, wily veteran Mark Recchi gets the Bruins on the board to send the game to overtime for the second-straight year. Marco Sturm plays the hero for the home team just 1:57 into the extra frame, potting the winner past Flyers netminder Michael Leighton.
