The Oilers and Canadiens make history, taking part in the first-ever outdoor game since the NHL’s inception in 1917. Donning balaclavas to keep warm in the frigid temperature, the feeling out process takes longer than usual at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton. After a scoreless first period, Richard Zednik wastes little time putting the Habs on the board, notching the first open air goal in league history 39 seconds into the second stanza. Zednik pots another goal before the final buzzer and teammate Yanic Perreault also notches a pair of markers to lead the Canadiens to a 4-3 win. Montreal netminder Jose Theodore finishes the night with 34 saves to his credit, all while sporting a red Habs toque over his goalie mask for the affair.
