MONTREAL (April 11, 2014) – Members of the media covering the Montreal Canadiens voted forward Brian Gionta as the 2013-14 recipient of the Jacques Beauchamp-Molson Trophy. The trophy is awarded annually to the member of the Canadiens who played a dominant role during the regular season, without earning any particular honor. Gionta succeeds forward Brandon Prust who was the recipient in 2012-13.

Gionta received the most total votes in the race for the Jacques Beauchamp-Molson Trophy, earning 66 points in the overall standings ahead, by a narrow margin, of forwards Brendan Gallagher (64 points) and Tomas Plekanec (51 points).

A native of Rochester, NY, Gionta has registered 39 points (17 goals, 22 assists) in 80 games since the beginning of the 2013-14 season. He tallied two of his goals on the powerplay and added as many winning goals. He ranks fifth on the team with 182 shots on goal. He currently sits in fourth place on the team for total ice time (1,426:57 minutes) and sixth on the team for total ice time on the penalty kill (126:16). The Canadiens captain has played all the team’s games this season except for the October 12 contest at Vancouver for personal reasons.

In his fifth season with the Canadiens, the 5’7’’, 176 lbs forward played his 700th career game in the NHL on October 15 at Winnipeg and he suited up for his 300th career game with the Canadiens on April 5 against Detroit. Gionta also scored the team 20,800th goal in franchise history (NHA + NHL), on January 4 against Ottawa.

Created in 1981 to honor the memory of the legendary sportswriter who spent most of his professional career covering the Canadiens, the Jacques Beauchamp-Molson Trophy was first awarded to Doug Jarvis following the 1981-82 season.

Brian Gionta will be presented with the Jacques Beauchamp-Molson Trophy during a ceremony prior to tomorrow’s game against the New York Rangers at the Bell Centre.
