Canadiens sign free agent Nick Tarnasky to a one-year contract

MONTRÉAL – Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin announced Saturday the signing of free agent forward Nick Tarnasky to a one-year, two-way contract (2013-14).

Tarnasky registered 26 points (16 goals, 10 assists) in 74 games with the AHL’s Rochester Americans in 2012-13. He led his team with 138 penalty minutes.

Tarnasky, 28, appeared in 245 career regular season games in the NHL with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Nashville Predators and Florida Panthers. He registered 30 points (13 goals, 17 assists) and served 297 penalty minutes.

Since his professional debut in 2004-05, the 6’02’’, 224 lbs centre appeared in 293 career regular season games in the AHL, registering 89 points (47 goals, 42 assists) and 571 penalty minutes. He also suited up for Vityaz Chekhov in the KHL (2011-12) and the ECHL’s Florida Everblades (2010-11).

A native of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta, Tarnasky was drafted in the ninth round, 287th overall by Tampa Bay at the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.
