The Numbers Game – April 27, 2013
TORONTO - Here's a numerical look at the Canadiens-Maple Leafs matchup on Saturday night at the Air Canada Centre.
4 – Team-high number of points logged by Brendan Gallagher in five games against the Leafs in 2012-13, with the 20-year-old winger adding an assist Saturday night with an unbelievable feed to Lars Eller late in the first period to tie the game for the Habs.
30 – Number of points racked up by Lars Eller this season in 46 games, after logging the same number in 79 games in 2011-12, with the great Dane beating James Reimer with slick first period marker before assisting on Andrei Markov’s second period go-ahead goal and Brendan Gallagher’s that followed.
6 – Number of goals scored during the Canadiens 2012-13 campaign in which both rookies Brendan Gallagher and Alex Galchenyuk both earned points, with the two first-year phenoms demonstrating a knack for coming together on plays ever since logging assists on each of their respective first goals in the league.
6:19 – Amount of time taken in Saturday night’s second frame of action for the Leafs to register their first shot of the period, finally getting one on Peter Budaj after sitting back as the Habs enjoyed a strong start to the period.
1 – Number of shots logged by the Maple Leafs against the Canadiens in Saturday’s second period, with the Habs completely shutting down the Toronto squad and scoring two goals in the process in possibly their best second period of the season.
14 – Number of years that have passed since the last time an NHL season went by in which a team didn’t score a single shorthanded goal, with the 2012-13 season ending with not one, but two teams in the Habs and the Lightning failing to nab a shorty.
10 – Number of multi-point games logged by Lars Eller this season, with the young center posting two goals and four assists over the course of his last three games.
10 – Number of wins logged by the Canadiens against the Maple Leafs in games to close out the season out of 16 opportunities since the NHL’s inaugural season in 1917, picking up their 10 victory against their Torontonian rivals on Saturday night.
5.5 – On average, the number of goals scored per game this season in the first four tilts between the Canadiens and Maple Leafs in 2012-13, with Saturday night’s game being no exception to the rule, seeing five goals were scored.
