The Numbers Game - February 7, 2013
BUFFALO – Here's a numerical look at the Habs-Sabres match-up on Thursday night at the First Niagara Center.
4 – Number of times this season that Tomas Plekanec has opened up the scoring for the Canadiens, beating Ryan Miller with his first shot of the night to help the Habs jump out to an early lead.
15 – Number of seconds separating Tomas Plekanec’s opening goal of the game and Steve Ott’s tying goal that came almost immediately afterwards, keeping the game tight five minutes into the action.
80 – Percentage of the Canadiens first 10 games of the season in which they’ve been first to strike on the scoresheet, boosting that stat again Thursday night with a Tomas Plekanec goal at 4:11 of the first.
6 – Number of players that are 5’9” or under in action in Thursday night’s game, with Tyler Ennis (5’9”, 157 lbs), Nathan Gerbe (5’5”, 178 lbs), Brian Gionta (5’7”, 174 lbs), Brendan Gallagher (5’9”, 178 lbs), Francis Bouillon (5’9”, 197 lbs) and David Desharnais (5’7” 177 lbs) all squaring off against each other at the First Niagara Center in Buffalo.
4 – Number of games over the course of his NHL career that Alexei Emelin hasn’t logged a hit, with two of those games coming against the Sabres. The Russian defenseman managed to avoid pushing that number to five when he hammered a Buffalo skater in the middle of the second period.
35 – Number of seconds separating Brendan Gallagher and Tyler Ennis’ second period markers, with the Sabres once again getting back on even footing with the Habs less than a minute after falling behind.
100 – Percentage of games since his return to the Habs lineup in which P.K. Subban has made his way onto the scoresheet, with the high-scoring defenseman giving the Canadiens back the lead thanks to a cannon of a slap shot during a 5-on-3 near the end of the second.
4 – Number of NHL defensemen who can boast at least a point-per-game average so far this season, with Tobias Enstrom, Alex Pietrangelo, Kevin Shattenkirk and Andrei Markov all setting themselves apart from the pack with their scoring touch.
10 – Number of goals scored on the Sabres by the Canadiens in their two games this season – as many as they managed against them in six games in 2011-12.
