Golden Galchenyuk

MONTREAL – Alex Galchenyuk gets off to a golden start in 2013.

He may have been held off the scoresheet in the United States’ last two games in Ufa, but it’s clear to see that the Canadiens’ first-round pick deserved every bit of the gold-medal success he’ll be bringing back with him to North America. The Habs prospect ended the tournament fourth in scoring among his U.S. teammates with a haul of eight points, giving him only one less than Jacob Trouba, J.T. Miller and John Gaudreau.

Despite dropping two games in the WJC’s preliminary round of competition, the Americans caught fire in the New Year to enjoy a perfect run since the start of 2013. After closing out 2012 in convincing fashion with a 9-3 win over Slovakia, the American squad never looked back, downing the Czech Republic, Canada and finally Sweden to win the World Junior Championships and mark the United States’ third gold medal finish at the tournament.

Canadiens prospects enjoyed a one-two finish in the latest edition of the WJC with 2012 second-round pick Sebastian Collberg representing Sweden in the gold medal match-up. Enjoying his own share of success in the tournament with four goals and two assists – good for first place on the Swedish squad – Collberg is also responsible for launching his team into the finals with a spectacular game-winning shootout goal that downed the Russians in the semi-finals.

All it takes is a quick look at the tournament results to see just how promising the Canadiens future looks these days.
