Canada opens with a win

Thursday, the top Canadian and Russian Juniors squared off for the first match of the four-game Canada-Russia Challenge, held to commemorate the famed 1972 Summit Series. The Canadiens’ fifth-round pick of 2012, Charles Hudon, was on hand to help represent Team Canada.

Canada managed to hold off the surging Russian squad in the final minutes of the game to walk away with a 3-2 victory in the Challenge’s opening match held in Yaroslavl, Russia. Hudon was kept off the scoresheet for the duration of the match and was assessed a two-minute penalty in the game’s final frame. Hudon’s best scoring opportunity came in the second period on a shorthanded breakaway. He was ultimately unable to light the lamp; his backhand attempt sailing over the net.

The two teams will clash again on Friday before making the trip across the Atlantic for the final two games of the competition.
