The Canadiens will select 3rd overall at this year\u2019s NHL Entry Draft

MONTREAL --  And…the results are in! The Canadiens will select 3rd overall at this year’s NHL Entry Draft, slated to take place in Pittsburgh on the 22nd and 23rd of June. In the end, the Edmonton Oilers wound up having their number picked and so will select first overall.

The upcoming draft will mark the first time since 2005 and only the second time since 1984 that the Canadiens will enjoy the opportunity to select in the top five. You may remember in 2005, when the Habs used one of the top picks to put their faith in a young netminder from British Columbia named Carey Price.

This summer’s draft marks the first time since 2007 that the team finishing last in the NHL’s regular season standings doesn’t receive the first overall pick. The last time this happened, the Philadelphia Flyers were forced to watch the Chicago Blackhawks steal their first pick, while they got bumped all the way down to fifth. The Blackhawks seized the opportunity to put their hands on Patrick Kane.

For a third consecutive year, the Edmonton Oilers will get the chance to break the ice at this summer’s NHL Entry Draft, having won Tuesday night’s lottery to make the jump from second pick to first. The Oilers used their last two top picks to welcome Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Taylor Hall into their organization. Over the course of the last 10 years, the Oilers have selected among the top 10 on four occasions. In addition to Nugent-Hopkins and Hall, they were also able to nab Magnus Paarjarvi as the 10th overall pick in 2009 and Sam Gagner as the 6th overall pick in 2007.
