Milestone game for Hal Gill

MONTREAL –The Canadiens game in Pittsburgh on Thursday will mark a significant milestone for defenseman Hal Gill who will be skating in his 1,000th NHL game. Gill, now in his third season with the Canadiens began his NHL career as a member of the Boston Bruins back on October 17, 1997 when the Bruins visited the Canucks in Vancouver.
Gill is the first player to reach that milestone in the NHL this season (Joe Thornton, with whom he made his NHL debut on October 17, 1997, is scheduled to play his 1,000th career game on Friday when the San Jose Sharks travel to New Jersey for a match-up against the Devils) is the 266th player in league history to reach that historic plateau. He’s also the 12th player to play his 1,000th career game in a Canadiens jersey after Henri Richard, Claude Provost, Frank Mahovlich, Larry Robinson, Bob Gainey, Jean Béliveau, Stéphane Quintal, Roman Hamrlik, Bryan Smolinski, Alex Kovalev and Patrice Brisebois. A US-born player, Gill is the 38th American to skate in 1,000 games in the NHL and the 15th US defenseman to do so. A native of Massachusetts, he is the 8th player, and first defenseman, from that state to accomplish the feat.
