Ron Wilson named as assistant coach of the Hamilton Bulldogs

MONTREAL – Montreal Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier announced Tuesday the appointment of Ron Wilson as assistant coach of the Hamilton Bulldogs of the American Hockey League. He will assist Clément Jodoin, who was named the Bulldogs’ head coach last July 22.

In 2010-11, Ron Wilson completed his second season as assistant coach of the Chicago Wolves and his 15th season as assistant coach in the AHL. During his two-year tenure the Wolves posted an 88-54-0-6-12 record (.606) in 160 regular season games. Chicago ranked first in the West Division in 2009-10.

A native of Toronto, Wilson is in his second stint with the Canadiens organization, after serving as an assistant coach with the Bulldogs from 2003-04 to 2008-09, maintaining a 232-181-16-19-17 record (.555) in 465 regular season games. He took over as a head coach in Hamilton, replacing Don Lever, and compiled a 10-3-2-0-0 record (.733) in 15 regular season contests.

Before joining the Bulldogs, Wilson was the assistant coach of the AHL Springfield Falcons (1996-97 to 1999-00) and the Saint John Flames (2000-01 to 2002-03). He served as a head coach of the Flames in 2002-03, maintaining a 22-22-4-0-0 record (.500) in 48 regular season games.

In 15 seasons as an assistant coach in the AHL, Wilson has a reputable record of 518-409-77-39-29 (.551) in 1,072 regular season contests. He won the Calder Cup during his first season with the Flames in 2000-01 as well with the Bulldogs in 2006-07.

Wilson played a total of 427 career AHL games with the Nova Scotia Voyageurs, the Sherbrooke Jets and Canadiens, as well as with the Moncton Hawks, recording 438 points (159 goals, 279 assists). Selected in the 13th round (133rd overall) by the Canadiens in the 1976 NHL Entry Draft, Wilson played 14 seasons in the NHL with the Winnipeg Jets, St. Louis Blues and Canadiens. The centre registered 326 points (110 goals, 216 assists) in 832 regular season games. He added 22 points (10 goals, 12 assists) in 63 playoff contests.
