Lucky No. 30
MONTREAL – After collecting dust in the Canadiens’ equipment room for the last four years, the No.30 will be making a return to the Bell Centre ice this season.

With the easy choice – signing with Montreal on July 1 – already made, newly-acquired netminder Peter Budaj turned his attention to more pressing matters: what number to have stitched to his new bleu-blanc-rouge jersey. The 28-year-old opted to spend the next two seasons sporting No.30.

The Slovakian goaltender will become the 17th player in franchise history to wear the number when he makes his Habs debut this fall.

A staple among goalies, No.30 has been worn by 10 Canadiens netminders over the years, from Jean-Guy Morissette in 1963-64 to David Aebischer in 2005 to 2007.

A fan favorite at the Forum, Habs tough guy Chris Nilan laid down the law in his familiar No.30 in the ‘80s and then again in his second stint with the Canadiens in 1991-92. Nilan’s name and number darkened the scoresheet early and often throughout his 523 games with the Canadiens, mostly thanks to the team-record 2,248 penalty minutes he racked up over the years. Fellow enforcer Turner Stevenson also donned the No.30 from 1993 to 1997, spending 352 minutes in the box before eventually switching to No.23.
