The boss checks in
Pierre Gauthier may have swapped his usual blazer and tie in favor of a far more relaxed summer linen look on Friday, but the Habs GM was hard at work on Day 4 of camp.
While the eyes of Habs fans and media alike being on last year’s top pick Louis Leblanc this week, Gauthier appears equally smitten with the young centerman.
“Leblanc is a very good player who will be a very good player no matter where he plays next season,” said Gauthier on the chances of the 19-year-old plying his trade in the QMJHL, AHL or back at Harvard in the fall. “He’s really hard worker and that’s his strongest quality which will also play a big role in his development. Camps like this one allow players like Louis to put in the work and speed up their development.”
Another hot topic at camp this week has been the growing league interest in Bulldogs coach Guy Boucher. While seeing an up-and-coming bench boss like Boucher get poached from the Habs by another NHL club would be unfortunate, the team has no intention stunting Boucher’s growth.
“Whether it’s Guy Boucher or anyone for that matter, when someone wants to advance their career, we’re going to help them, not hold them back,” revealed Gauthier. “If it’s Guy or Martin Raymond or Kirk Muller or Perry Pearn, we will help them. It’s our policy to not only not hold people back, but help them along.”
As he continued to weigh on everything under the sun in what in proving to be a busy offseason for the Canadiens, Gauthier faced every question head on.
On the heels of the Canadiens paring down their scouting staff, rumors of Player Development director Trevor Timmins have been swirling of late. However, only weeks away from the NHL Draft, Gauthier will soon be huddled around the Habs table with Timmins, something he fully expects to do for years to come.
“When you do a full analysis of our scouting department, they’re doing a good job and we are clearly above the league average at the draft since Trevor has been on board,” said Gauthier. “Trevor is here to stay.”
