Market fresh
MONTREAL – Much has been made of the truckload of unrestricted free agents the Canadiens have on their current roster, but it turns out that Bob Gainey won’t be the only busy GM this summer.

For the last time, yes the Habs have a grand total of 10 potential UFAs who could all test the market as of July 1, but they aren’t alone. In fact, the Canadiens aren't even the NHL club with the longest list of possible escapees when the market opens. That honor belongs to the Colorado Avalanche, who despite being without a GM for the time being, boast 11 UFAs.

Tied with the Habs at 10 are the Penguins and the Stars, with the Devils, Canucks and Flames right behind them with nine.

The real reason why the Canadiens continue to dominate all UFA chatter this spring isn’t the overall number of players they may soon have in the league’s store window, but rather the star power of the bulk of them. With a combined salary of over 26 million dollars last season, Saku Koivu, Alex Kovalev, Robert Lang, Alex Tanguay, Mike Komisarek and Mathieu Schneider will not go unnoticed should they be still available on July 1.

While no other team boasts such an impressive feast of possible free agents, the Canucks come the closest, with Vancouver’s Swedish quartet of the Sedin twins, Mats Sundin and Mattias Ohlund being nothing to sneeze at.

At the other end of the spectrum are the Ottawa Senators, who only have Chris Neil and Mike Comrie to worry about as potential defectors.
