Christopher Higgins: Live from Bern
It’s been a crazy few days. I took a flight out on Sunday at four from Montreal and arrived in Munich at 4:30 AM local time. Since I had a layover of five hours, I walked around the airport for a bit and tried to talk to this German girl but she only knew how to say "McDonald’s" and "Jack Bauer." I said goodbye and was off to Bern.

The pool the U.S. is in plays in Bern, which I’ve been told is about an hour and a half from Zurich. I’ve never been anywhere in Switzerland before but the country is beyond gorgeous. Probably the greenest grass and trees I’ve ever seen and the backdrop of the Alps is breathtaking. The city seems to have an amazing old-world charm.  I look forward to walking around the city and getting a better feel for the people and culture.

I had my first practice Tuesday afternoon and after two rough drills for me, Ron Wilson skated over and said "It’s a good thing you’re not playing Wednesday against Sweden." (I’m not allowed to play until Thursday due to roster rules.)

I’ve been asked a few times to go to the Worlds but I’ve never been healthy enough to play. Certainly I would like to be in the second round of the playoffs with dreams of winning the Cup but playing for the U.S. is and always will be special. I haven’t donned a U.S. sweater since the World Juniors in Halifax in 2003, but I still love pulling the jersey over my head.

I’m rooming with Alec Richards, who is just finishing up his senior year at Yale, which is where I went to college. He seems like a great guy and we've been swapping Yale college stories since we know a lot of the same people.

I haven’t been able to do much because I just arrived on Monday and I’ve been really struggling with the time change. On Monday night I slept 14 hours, which is a new personal best and, yes, I’m proud of it.

Anyway, apparently, there’s a restaurant in the city called the Bear Pit, where there are bears in cages near you when you eat dinner. From what I've been told it does not sound safe whatsoever but I will definitely be checking it out soon.
