Habs Notebook - April 21, 2009
MONTREAL - In today’s Habs Notebook, Maxim Lapierre spots a perfect script, Bob Gainey looks to late night television, and the mark of a champion.

Playoff magic: While the Canadiens might have their backs against the wall, Maxim Lapierre isn’t quite ready to dust off his golf clubs.

“It might not have happened often that a team has come back from a 3-0 deficit, but it’s not impossible,” he noted. “With the aura surrounding the Canadiens-Bruins rivalry, there’s no better series for that to happen; the situation couldn’t be more apropos.”

Hi Dave, it’s Bob: With his team in a tough spot as they trail the Bruins in their series, head coach Bob Gainey was asked to reveal his Top 10 worst moments of the season.

“I don’t know. I’d probably have to ask David Letterman for some help,” replied Gainey. “There are lots of things that go on during the season – injuries, bad games, etc.”

Times change…not the leader: Despite the nearly foot in height and 70 pounds on the scale that separate Saku Koivu and Zdeno Chara, the Habs captain hasn’t hesitated to mix it up in the corners with his Boston counterpart.  That effort is one everyone should follow, according to his coach.

“I’ve been in this league for many years, in different roles and I can recognize a champion. The league has changed a lot since the days of the Original Six where a player needed just seven or eight seasons to eventually win a Stanley Cup,” explained Gainey. “Now, there are 30 teams made up of players who have represented their countries on the international stage, participated in All-Star games, and are still the leaders of their team, but they haven’t won the Cup yet. Saku still has that determination and talent and continues to show it. He’s a great player.”
