Fly on the Wall - Jan. 10, 2009
MONTREAL -- Here’s what the Capitals had to say after being bounced from the Bell Centre with a 5-4 loss against the Canadiens on Saturday night.

Boudreau wants his team to smarten up

After watching Washington defenseman Milan Jucina fall over himself as Sergei Kostitsyn stole the puck from between his legs to pot the game-winner, Caps bench boss Bruce Boudreau had some advice for the young blue-liner, just for future reference.

“He could’ve cross-checked him.  I mean, do anything. If you can’t find the puck and the guy’s coming at you, just stand there and cross-check him so he doesn’t get the puck.  Don’t just look in your feet.

“We allowed four goals in the third period and that’s just dumb hockey.  It’s dumb.  But they never quit, and I sort of thought we were both sort of playing for a tie in those last two minutes.  All we had to do was get the puck, get it deep and we lose it at the blue line and don’t protect the puck. You can’t win championships like that.”

Alexander feeling not-so-great

Russian superstar – and Alex Kovalev’s backup for the upcoming All-Star Game – Alexander Ovechkin may have set up the Caps’ fourth goal to tie the game late in the third period but that wasn’t the only point he was hoping for.

“It’s tough to lose with 20 seconds left, especially in that situation. We lost and we can’t say it was about luck; it was all about us. I think we deserved at least a point tonight though – we played great.  We had great chances but didn’t score, but it’s hockey and we’re just really disappointed right now.”

The Caps didn’t lose – they just ran out of time

With such a potent offense, Washington rearguard Mike Green has good reason to be confident about his team’s ability to win games in overtime.  The problem is, they need to make it there first.

“We kind of shot ourselves in the foot and gave up a couple of goals.  We feed off of going into overtime and just hung ourselves out to dry in the last 27 seconds."
