The golden touch...again
Thanks to Canada’s 5-1 win over Sweden in Monday’s grand finale in Ottawa, Subban became just the second Canadiens prospect to be crowned a champion two years in a row. Fellow rearguard Patrice Brisebois was the first to realize the feat, tasting gold in 1990 and 1991.
A seventh defenseman at the 2008 tourney, Subban was one of Canada’s top blue-liners in 2009, recording three goals and six assists in addition to posting a tournament-best plus-12 differential.
His solid play also earned him a spot on the tournament’s All-Star team, making him the fifth Canadiens prospect to receive such honors, but only the first blue-liner. Carey Price (2007) and Jose Theodore (1996) were named the tournament’s top netminders, while Valeri Bure (1994) and Shayne Corson (1986) were recognized up front.
Defenseman Nichlas Torp, the Canadiens’ eighth pick in 2007, settled for silver. He picked up one assist and finished the competition with a plus-5 differential.
Americans Ryan McDonagh and Danny Kristo, the other two Habs draft picks representing their countries in Ottawa, completed the World Junior Hockey Championship in fifth place.
