Looking ahead: Mike Komisarek
Canadiens opponents may not know Komisarek by name, but they certainly know the taste of the glass at the Bell Centre, with the rugged defenseman never shying away from delivering one of his trademark bone-crushing hits. The 26-year-old doesn’t discriminate when it comes to who feels his wrath in the corners of the Habs’ zone.
After finishing second in the league last season with 266 hits, Komisarek will now be looking to pry the belt from the NHL’s reigning champion, Dustin Brown of the Kings.
Always ready to sacrifice his body for the team, 6-foot-4, 240-pounder will be looking to defend a crown of his own this coming season. Thanks to his 227 blocked shots last year, Komisarek dethroned Anton Volchenkov of the Senators, the league leader in 2006-07.
With Georges Laraque coming to town, Komisarek won’t have to drop the gloves with incensed victims of his huge hits as often this season, with the incoming heavyweight ready to handle the dirty work. Now destined to spend even less time in the penalty box, Komisarek should have little trouble bumping up his average ice-time for a fifth consecutive season.
Three points shy of the 50-point mark in his career, Komisarek will be gunning to build on the 17-points he posted last season alongside his trusty blue line sidekick, Andrei Markov.
