Canadiens, Molson announce Guy Lafleur Awards of Excellence for 2007-08

MONTREAL – The Montreal Canadiens and Molson announced Wednesday the recipients of the Guy-Lafleur Awards of Excellence and Merit for the 2007-08 season. The awards are presented annually to amateur hockey players who have best combined a level of excellence in hockey and academics.

The program was created in 1985 to encourage sports and academics excellence for all players within the four major amateur hockey leagues in the province of Quebec; the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), the Quebec member schools of the Canadian Interuniversity Sports (CIS) and the Junior AAA HockeyLeague. The winners are selected by a jury composed of representatives from the sports media and thehockey and education communities. Molson will award recipients of the Guy-Lafleur Awards of Excellence a $6,000 scholarship given out over a 3-year period, and the winners of the Guy-Lafleur Awards of Merit a $1,000 scholarship.

QUEBEC UNIVERSITY SPORTS

Nicolas Désilets (UQTR Patriotes) – The 23-year-old student, who is currently completing a PhD in chiropractic studies at Trois-Rivières' Université du Québec, maintained a 3.21 grade-point average (out of 4.3) in his first three semesters. The 6-foot-1, 205 pound defenseman totaled 16 points (four goals and 12 assists) last season. Despite a demanding
academic schedule with as many as 10 classes per semester, Nicolas managed to attend team practices and games without compromising his success in the classroom.

QUEBEC MAJOR JUNIOR HOCKEY LEAGUE

Robert Slaney (Cape Breton Screaming Eagles) – The 20-year old Business Administration student at Cape Breton University maintained a 87% academic average. The left winger, who hails from Carbonear, Newfoundland, recorded 55 points (26 goals and 29 assists) in 64 games as a member of the QMJHL’s Screaming Eagles. His on-ice achievements, combined with his academic results, earned him the title of Screaming Eagles Scholastic Player of the Month in December 2006, January 2006 and December 2007 and was a finalist for the Marcel-Robert Award as the QMJHL’s Scholastic Player of the of the Year.

QUEBEC JUNIOR AAA HOCKEY LEAGUE

Alexandre Dubois (Champlain College Cougars - Sherbrooke) – A 20-year old Social Science student at Champlain College, Alexandre displayed outstanding academic results with a 90% average. The Sherbrooke native was just as impressive in the crease with a .898 save percentage. He led the Champlain Cougars to the playoff championship, posting a stellar 2.62 goals-against average and earned the playoff MVP award. Alexandre is the recipient of the Patrick-Lalime Award as the netminder with the best save percentage in the
LHJAAAQ.
