Habs Notebook - April 29, 2008
Words of wisdom: When pushed to reveal what he would tell Carey Price following the young goalie’s tough start in Philly, Saku Koivu didn’t hesitate for a second.
“He just needs to forget about it and put it behind him,” said Koivu. “Carey has played enough hockey in his life to know that there will tough games like this. All he needs to know is that all his talent and skills haven’t gone anywhere. He’s still got all of that going for him. I’m not that worried about it because I know what he can do.”
Go in already: In Games 2 and 3, the Canadiens’ offense has turned into a veritable firing squad, bombarding the Flyers’ Martin Biron with 70 shots, while Philadelphia has only managed 37. Though the Flyers have escaped with two wins despite the disparity in shots, head coach Guy Carbonneau wants his team to keep pulling the trigger.
“When you’re generating the type of scoring chances that we are right now, we’re going to find a way to win,” vowed Carbonneau. “We need to keep at it and continue with all the good things we’ve been doing. This series is far from over.”
Lucky No. 4: With the Canadiens and Flyers facing off in a playoff series for the fifth time, they’ve locked horns in four previous Game 4s. Montreal goes into Wednesday night’s crucial fourth game with a 3-1 record against Philadelphia, including victories in 1989, 1976 and 1973. The Habs' only Game 4 defeat to the Flyers came in the spring of 1987, the only year Philadelphia ever went on to eliminate Montreal from the playoffs.
Unlucky No. 4: While the Habs’ Game 4 resumé versus the Flyers is good news for Canadiens, their recent performances in the fourth game of a series are cause for concern. The Canadiens’ Game 4 win over the Bruins in the first round snapped an 11-year stretch for Montreal without winning a fourth game with the Habs going 0-7 along the way. Prior to the Canadiens’ win over Boston, their last Game 4 victory came in 1997, when the Habs staved off elimination at the hands of the Devils.
