PRESS RELEASE --

MONTREAL -- Right winger Alex Kovalev is the Molson Cup Player of the Year.

Kovalev amassed 85 points in Molson Cup standings, winning four of the six monthly segments (November to March). He earned 10 First Star selections, 10 Second Star selections and 5 Third Star selections. The Russian forward finished ahead of teammates Carey Price and Tomas Plekanec, who collected 54 and 47 points, respectively. Price, winner of the Molson Cup for October, also earned the honor of the last segment of the season (March-April) with 23 points.

Kovalev, who leads the Canadiens with 35 goals, 48 assists, and 83 points, also compiled the best plus-minus rating with a plus-17 in 81 games this season. He ranks second on the team with 225 shots on goal for a 15.6 shooting percentage. Kovalev leads the NHL with 47 power-play points (17 goals, 30 assists) and registered his second-most productive season with 83 points. He is currently 12th in the NHL scoring race.

Kovalev will be presented with the Molson Cup during a pre-game ceremony prior to Saturday night's game against the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Bell Centre.

Kovalev succeeds Cristobal Huet who captured the award in 2006-07.
