Original Six Salute: Canadiens-Red Wings
PRESS RELEASE

MONTREAL - As part of the festivities leading up to the team’s Centennial on December 4, 2009, the Montreal Canadiens will hold a special pre-game ceremony on Tuesday, December 4 - the team’s 98th anniversary - to salute the 81-year rivalry between the Canadiens and the Detroit Red Wings. The Detroit franchise was formerly known as both the Cougars, from 1926 through 1930, and as the Falcons, from 1930 to 1932.

The pre-game ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m.

For the occasion, some of the greatest players at the center of this fierce competition from both organizations will be honored at center ice. A video montage depicting some of the most electrifying moments of the Canadiens-Detroit rivalry will be featured on the central scoreboard. Fans in attendance will also receive a superb commemorative program highlighting the most memorable events of this Original Six 81-year rivalry and its main actors.

Former Red Wings expected to attend this historic evening include the legendary Gordie Howe (1946-71), third on the NHL all-time list with 1,850 career points, Alex Delvecchio (1950-74), three-time Lady Byng Trophy recipient, Ted Lindsay (1944-57 and 1964-65), an eight-time First NHL All-Star team selection, Marcel Pronovost (1949-65), a five-time Stanley Cup winner, including four with the Red Wings, and Marcel Dionne (1971-75), the NHL’s fourth all-time goal scorer with 731.

Former Canadiens players expected to attend the ceremony include the incomparable Jean Béliveau (1953-71), winner of 10 Stanley Cups and recipient of every major NHL award, Jean-Guy Talbot (1954-67), one of twelve players to have won five straight Stanley Cups, Stéphane Richer (1985-91 and 1996-98), the only player other than Guy Lafleur to record two 50-goal seasons with the Canadiens, Claude Lemieux (1985-90), the only modern days player to win the Stanley Cup with four different teams including the Canadiens in 1986, and Dickie Moore (1951-63), a six-time Stanley Cup winner, including five consecutive Cups from 1956 to 1960.

Next month, the Montreal Canadiens will host a similar ceremony when longtime rival the Chicago Blackhawks visit the Bell Centre on January 8, 2008. The Original Six rivalry salutes will continue in 2008-09 – the Canadiens’ 100th season - with traditional match-ups against the New York Rangers and Toronto Maple Leafs.
