Habs sign defenseman Mathieu Carle

PRESS RELEASE

MONTREAL - Canadiens GM Bob Gainey announced Tuesday the signing of defenseman Mathieu Carle to a three-year contract (2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10). As per club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Carle has joined the Hamilton Bulldogs of the American Hockey League. The Bulldogs will host the Manitoba Moose tonight in Hamilton for Game 3 of the AHL North Division Final series.

Carle, 19, played for the Acadie-Bathurst Titan and the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies of the QMJHL in 2006-07. He registered 70 points (16 goals, 54 assists) in 63 games, with 79 penalty minutes. He also posted an plus/minus rating of plus-11. In the 2007 playoffs, he collected 16 points in 16 games with the Huskies (six goals, 10 assists).

A native of Gatineau, Carle finished third in scoring among QMJHL defensemen (70 points), and second in assists (54). He had a 14-game point streak (5-20-25), from September 29 to November 8, the longest among QMJHL defensemen and second-longest among Canadian Hockey League rearguards. Carle was also named the QMJHL Defensive Player of the Week on two occasions (October 30-November 5; December 11-17).

In four full seasons in the QMJHL, the 6-foot, 207-pound defenseman took part in 258 regular season games with Acadie-Bathurst and Rouyn-Noranda, recording 49 goals and 146 assists for a total of 195 points (49-146-195), with 311 penalty minutes. Carle also played in 33 career playoff games, registering 7 goals and 24 assists (7-24-31) and 45 penalty minutes.

Carle was the Canadiens' third pick (second round), 53rd overall, in 2006.
