Koivu earns February Molson Cup


Saku Koivu put up 14 points in 15 games in February.

PRESS RELEASE

MONTREAL - Saku Koivu became the first Canadiens player to win two monthly segments of the Molson Cup for the 2006-07 season as he was chosen the Canadiens' Player of the Month for February.

Koivu, who also who the December segment, collected 13 points in the Molson Cup standings, following two 1st star selections and one 2nd star selection. Right-winger Michael Ryder took 2nd place with eight points (1-1-0), while centreman Tomas Plekanec, the Canadiens' Player of the Month in January, collected five points (1-0-0).

In 15 games in February, Koivu scored two goals and added a team-high 12 assists to lead the team with 14 points, and recorded 31 shots on goal. Between February 18 and 26, Koivu registered at least one point in five straight games, collecting two goals and 10 assists in that span.

In the Molson Cup overall standings, goaltender Cristobal Huet holds first place with 68 points (10-5-3), ahead of Koivu (6-3-4 - 43 points) and Ryder (4-2-1 - 27 points).

In 2006-2007, the Molson Cup scoring system grants five points for every first star selection, three points for every second star selection and one point for every third star selection.

A presentation honoring the Molson Cup winner will take place prior to the game on Tuesday March 13 against the New York Islanders, at the Bell Centre.
