Plekanec takes January Molson Cup

PRESS RELEASE

MONTREAL - Centreman Tomas Plekanec is the fourth winner of the Molson Cup for the 2006-07 season as he was chosen the Canadiens' Player of the Month for January.

Plekanec collected 14 points in the Molson Cup standings, following two 1st star selections, one 2nd star selection and one 3rd star selection. Forward Michael Ryder took second place with 10 points (2-0-0), while goaltender Cristobal Huet collected six points (1-0-1).

In 12 games in January, Plekanec led the Canadiens in goals (7), points (12), plus/minus rating (+3) and shooting efficiency (7 goals on 28 shots - 25%). The Czech Republic native recorded five power play points (3-2), one game-winning goal and scored the team's only shorthanded goal of the month (January 29 against the Ottawa Senators). That tally was his 10th of the season, helping him establish a career best for goals during the regular season.

In the Molson Cup overall standings, Huet holds first place with 65 points (10-4-3), ahead of forwards Saku Koivu (4-2-4 - 30 points) and Christopher Higgins (2-4-1 - 23 points).

In 2006-2007, the Molson Cup scoring system grants five points for every first star selection, three points for every second star selection and one point for every third star selection.

A presentation honoring the Molson Cup winner will take place prior to Saturday afternoon's game against the New York Islanders, at the Bell Centre.
