Koivu Molson Cup recipient for December


PRESS RELEASE

MONTREAL - Forward Saku Koivu is the third winner of the Molson Cup for the 2006-07 season as he was chosen the Canadiens' Player of the Month for December.

Koivu collected 19 points in the Molson Cup standings, following three 1st star selections, one 2nd star selection and one 3rd star selection. Goaltender Cristobal Huet took 2nd place with 18 points (2-2-2), while defenseman Andrei Markov collected 11 points (1-2-0).

In 14 games in December, Koivu led the Canadiens in goals (9), points (16), power play goals (5) and game winning goals (2). The Canadiens' captain had four two-goal games, one behind the team record for most multiple-goal games in a month. He was also one of five Canadiens players to score a shorthanded goal in December, and he posted a shooting efficiency rating of 34.6% (nine goals on 26 shots).

In the Molson Cup overall standings, Huet holds first place with 59 points (9-4-2), ahead of Koivu (4-2-3 - 29 points) and forward Christopher Higgins (1-4-1 - 18 points).

In 2006-2007, the Molson Cup scoring system grants five points for every first star selection, three points for every second star selection and one point for every third star selection.

A presentation honoring the Molson Cup winner will take place prior to Saturday afternoon's game against the New York Rangers, at the Bell Centre.
