Canadiens sign Streit to two-year pact
MONTREAL - Canadiens GM Bob Gainey announced Wednesday the signing of defenseman Mark Streit to a two-year contract (2006-07, 2007-08). As per club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The Canadiens' ninth round pick, 262nd overall, in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, Streit played in 48 games in his first NHL season in 2005-06. The 28-year-old Swiss defenseman registered 11 points (two goals, nine assists) and 28 penalty minutes.
Also the captain of the Swiss National hockey team, Streit participated in the 2006 Olympic Games in Torino, and the 2002 Games in Salt Lake City. He also took part in the IIHF World Hockey Championship on nine occasions, playing over 70 games at the international level, and registering over 30 points.
