Markov re-signs for two years
Russian rearguard gears up for fifth season on Canadiens' blue line

Now a staple on the Russian blue line for all international events, Markov will undoubtedly be packing his bags for the Olympics in Italy this coming February.

PRESS RELEASE

MONTREAL - Canadiens GM Bob Gainey announced Thursday the signing of defenseman Andrei Markov to a two-year contract. As per club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Markov, 26, now entering his fifth season with the Canadiens, spent the 2004-05 season with the Moscow Dynamo of the Russian Elite League where he registered 23 points in 42 games (7 goals, 16 assists). Markov chipped in with two goals in 10 playoff games in helping lead the Dynamo to the league championship.

Markov also answered his home country's call for both the 2004 World Cup of Hockey where he picked up an assist in two games, and the 2005 World Hockey Championships in Austria where he recorded five points in nine games.

Markov had 28 points (6 goals, 22 assists) in 69 games with the Canadiens in 2003-04. The 6-foot, 203-pounder has 112 points (30 goals, 82 assists) and 96 penalty minutes in 267 career NHL games since making his Canadiens' debut in 2000. Markov was Montreal's sixth round pick, 162nd overall in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.
