Sak is back: Koivu signs one-year deal
Captain returns for 10th campaign with team

An offensive sparkplug with Montreal since his debut in 1995-96, Koivu will enter the 2005-06 season two points shy of 400 for his career.

PRESS RELEASE

MONTREAL - Canadiens GM Bob Gainey announced Monday the signing of captain Saku Koivu for the 2005-06 season.  As per club policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Koivu, 30, will begin his 10th season with the Canadiens (his 11th in the NHL, including the locked-out 2004-05 campaign) in 2005-06.  In 2004-05, he played for TPS Turku, his hometown club in Finland.  He registered 16 points (eight goals, eight assists) and 28 penalty minutes in 20 games. He ranked third on the Canadiens scoring list with 14 goals and 55 points in 68 games in 2003-04.  He also led the team with 11 points in 11 games during the postseason.

The Canadiens' first-round pick and the 21st overall selection in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft, Koivu has played in 497 career regular season games with Montreal, totalling 398 points (120 goals, 278 assists). He has also registered 34 points (13 goals, 21 assists) in 40 playoff games.

Recipient of the Bill Masterton Trophy in 2002 for his perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey following his battle with cancer, Koivu has been the Canadiens captain since late in the 1998-99 season.
