MONTREAL -- What started as some good-natured back and forth on Friday afternoon had become, by Friday night, official: the Canadiens and late-night king Jimmy Fallon have a bet riding on the outcome of the Eastern Conference Final.
Fallon, the former star of Saturday Night Live and current host of NBC’s The Tonight Show – taped at the famed studios situated at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York – confirmed he will wear a Canadiens jersey during one of his monologues in the event Montreal bests the Rangers in their series that starts Saturday afternoon. In turn, the Canadiens will change their @CanadiensMTL Twitter avatar to a photo of Fallon of his choosing for one day, plus outfit their famed mascot, Youppi!, in a Rangers jersey and post 10 different pictures of him walking around Montreal showing it off.
“It’s on. I want Youppi! on the mechanical bull at Chez Serge,” Fallon tweeted.
The deal as originally proposed on Twitter by the Canadiens to @JimmyFallon – an account with in excess of 12.7M followers – almost fell apart when Fallon rejected some of the team’s earlier suggestions in the event of a Rangers win, some of which included Youppi! wearing a Rangers jersey at the teams’ first meeting at the Bell Centre next year, or the Habs’ mascot personally delivering some Quebec poutine in a Rangers jersey to Fallon’s house band on The Tonight Show, The Roots.
In the end, a deal was struck, and now in addition to the action on the ice, Habs and Rangers fans can both look forward to a bit of irreverence that will follow the series one way or another.
Within minutes of the bet being formalized, the Rangers promised to deliver for their fellow New Yorker, tweeting from their @NYRangers account, “We got you @JimmyFallon! #NYRPlayoffs”.
Needless to say, the Canadiens have other plans.
The Tonight Show airs weekday nights on NBC at 11:35 p.m.
