MONTREAL – There may be nothing more iconic for Montreal hockey fans than the sight of the Canadiens’ blue-blanc-rouge jerseys. But what does the rest of the world think?
ESPN helped answer that question today when they released an in-depth look at the best uniforms in pro sports. The extremely comprehensive list ranks uniforms from all 122 teams in the four major North American sporting leagues – NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL – in order from most cringe-inducing to nicest.
The Yankees, Red Sox, Cowboys, Steelers and Celtics are but a few of the legendary teams whose uniform challenged for the No. 1 position. And yet they all came up short.
The Canadiens’ legendary logo and colors found the top of the heap. A simple, straightforward design, coupled with a logo recognized around the world helped propel the Habs uniform to the No.1 spot, with the list’s author, Paul Lukas, claiming, “This isn't just a perfect hockey uniform set -- it's a perfect uniform set, period.”
To find the next NHL team on the list, you’d have to look down to the No.5 spot, occupied by the Boston Bruins. In total, six NHL jerseys made their way into the top 25, with five of them representing the league’s original six teams. The sixth team – the Chicago Blackhawks – made the list at No.49.
Of all the team uniforms from each sport, it was ultimately the Sacramento Kings that had the dubious distinction of wearing the least attractive jerseys, coming in last place, or 122nd overall. Among NHL teams, the Colorado Avalanche and Dallas Stars were at the bottom of the pile, in 118th and 117th place, respectively. It’s of course worth mentioning that the list only represents the opinions and tastes of a single person.
