How do you show your passion for the Canadiens through social media?
I'd failed to really take it in properly but then I went to the Bell Centre for my first game in January 7, 2010. It was against the Florida Panthers - the Habs won 2-0. And I even met Youppi, what a lovely guy he is.
I was literally stunned by the electrical energy pulsing through my body - I knew it was destiny, I felt part of the team within seconds and the incredible atmosphere in the arena had the hairs of my neck standing up. There was this feeling of excitement and passion coursing through my veins. I knew then I would be a Habs for life and I am. It felt I'd been in the dark and now I'd seen the light - I truly felt connected from that moment and relish calling myself part of this organisation.
But back in Glasgow, social media is my lifeline to The Habs. I do get the games on my cable sports channels but there is no coverage of ice hockey in the UK. So before and during most games, I go on the official Habs facebook page and post my thoughts, I try to make them inspirational. One great one was when I used a quote from Shakespeare's MacBeth to make my point. Seeing the replies and interacting with other fans is superb, you feel you're all connected by this amazing team no matter where you come from, what you look like or what you do in life.
I also tweet about the games and team - as all my contacts/friends are UK based, so they don't know about ice hockey, so I use social media to spread the word and introduce them to the greatest sports team on the planet. I also cheekily message my favourite player PK Subban on Twitter too, but I've yet to get a reply from the great man!
Les Glorieux have changed my life and nothing beats the feeling of seeing the big C and knowing you're part of it. I will forever be in debt to the city and people of Montreal for doing that.
